Umea Port of the Future

- for sustainable transports and modal shift in the Scan-Med Core Network Corridor

Umeå hamn

The overall goal of the project is to strengthen the EU's internal market by improving the capacity for maritime transport via the Port of Umeå, promoting industrial expansion in Northern Europe and at the same time reducing the environmental impact of transport systems.

The project is taking place in the Port of Umeå, Sweden, which is part of the overall TEN-T network within the EU. It aims to project planned investments for the South Quay and dredging of the fairway. This involves carrying out the necessary technical studies, cost-benefit analyses and environmental studies to upgrade the port's capacity as a response to the industrial expansion in the region.

These studies are preparatory for the works to be carried out in the future (not part of the current project) and include the construction of new quays, optimization of intermodal infrastructure in the port and adaptation of the fairway.

The project takes place in five work packages

WP1 - Quay studies

  • Design of Southern quay
  • Investigation and design of shore power (Electrification of Port of Umeå)

WP2 - Infrasructur intern logistics

  • Comprehensive transport/logistics study
    Road and port entrance design
    Railway track design

WP3 - Dredging fairway

  • EIA dredging incl. environmental permit application
  • Design for dredging in port area
  • Simulation of fairway to Port of Umeå

WP4 - Cost-benefit analysis

WP5 - Project management and communication
